Among 8 National Parks in Croatia, Plitvice Lakes are the oldest and largest ones. A popular legend about the creation of the Lakes says that after a long period of draught the Black Queen showed mercy upon the people and the dry lend and sent them heavy rain which formed 16 bigger and many little lakes connected by waterfalls. The Lakes are considered to be very young, formed somewhere between 12 000 and 15 000 years.
Plitvice Lakes are situated in the east of Lika, between the mountains Mala Kapela and Plješivica. The National Park offers not only an unforgettable walk across the lakes but also a view of its rich flora and fauna. The most famous forest dweller is certainly the brown bear whose species is protected, as is the wolf. The flora which includes many species of orchids is protected as well. Although summer is the most popular time to visit the Lakes, we recommend visiting them during winter when the nature is covered in snow and ice.
